Happy ARTOBER!!!!
With October comes rain, cooler temperatures, beautiful color and Artober! Illinois officially
celebrates the fine arts during October and Sandburg is excited to be a part of the celebration.
This month is all about sharing our love of art with the entire Sandburg community. The Art
Department began our month with Window Art, designed and created by students in A.P.
Studio Art. Students were required to visually represent an economical, environmental, political
or social message to peers and adults. A special thanks to Mr. Randy Konseur for his help in
displaying the work in the windows.
Week 1 of Artober included a workshop for students from Drawing, Painting and AP Studio Art
classes. Visiting artist Sarah Rehmer, back for a fifth time, taught students the historic
technique of painting with encaustics, a combination of pigments and hot wax. Sarah
demonstrated how to mix pigments with wax on a heated palette, and apply the mixture to
specially prepared boards. Each student produced two works using this technique that is
currently enjoying a renaissance with exhibiting professional artists all over the country.
Ceramic artist Ryan Michel visited students in Beginning; Advanced Ceramics classes. Ryan, an
alumni of Andrew High School and a working artist, presented a lecture, demonstration and an
art installation. Students were impressed with Ryan’s sculptural work, which represents animal
adaptations in a modern world.
Students sent “Appreciation Postcards” to their favorite teachers throughout the Sandburg
building during week 3. Postcards were created by re-cycling posters and discarded artwork.
Students were encouraged to recognize a teacher who has made a difference in their lives.
We continued our festivities with Adam Fabianski, also back for a fifth time, to create another
gigantic chalk mural that covered the north parking lot sidewalk. Adam, (son of Coach
Fabianski) is a professional sidewalk artist. “Finding Dory” was his new mural design, executed
as a huge group project. Adam produced a large grid of the design and smaller sections of the
grid were passed out to individual students as they worked. Students of every art class created
a majority of the work. Many thanks to Adam for his design, guidance and unlimited supply of
patience. Thanks also to Mr. Desi Vuillame for his continued generosity in recording our event.
The final event of the month was a special evening "Kaffee Haus;" for all students, families
and staff on October 27 th . Starbucks provided the coffee and Sandburg students baked the
scrumptious treats for this fund-raising evening! Musicians, poets, singers and performers of all
types entertained us at the open-mic. Kaffee Haus saw the return of “Art & Poetry While You
Wait”, a truly inventive and fun event, sponsored by Mrs. Kathryn Guelcher and Mr. Tom
Maguire of the English Department. Customers approached student writers and artists to
create custom work based on a topic of their choice, while they waited. Art tables were set up
with drawing media and “Day of the Dead” skulls. Two art exhibits provided the icing on this
Kaffee Haus cake, as students, parents and teachers talked about their work with visitors.
It was truly an evening for all of the senses with an estimate of over 200 people attending.
