Advanced Placement Studio Art

This course is for highly motivated visual art students working at or near the freshman college level.  Students are required to produce a portfolio of works demonstrating a high level of commitment, quality, and revision. Students are also required to write about their approaches, processes, and materials for each work.

There are 3 types of A.P. portfolios:

Drawing (both digital and analog methods)

2D (Digital and Graphic Design & Photography)

3D (Ceramics, Jewelry & Sculpture)

 Required sections of the portfolio:

  • Sustained Investigation: An in-depth artistic exploration of a personal theme or idea developed over 15 works of art. Works must also show revisions and investigations.  (digital submission).

  • Selected Works: The five best works showing quality and skill. 5 actual works are sent to the College Board (3D digital only).

  • Every work must have a writing component accompanying it to explain ideas, processes, materials, and sizes.  Revision of works is required.

Because the A.P. Studio Art portfolio is a performance-based exam, it is expected all students will submit this A.P. exam.

The portfolio is submitted to the College Board for judging and possible college credit. It is important that students possess

the ability to work independently on the research of media, techniques, subject matter, and historical precedents.

In addition, working on at least two pieces at a time will enable students to use their time more efficiently.

Students who are able to take this initiative will find the course load more manageable.

Prerequisite for AP Studio Art: Students must take a minimum of 3 art classes, with a grade of C or higher in all 3 or teacher recommendations.
